Musicians are often thrust into the limelight, idolized and live lives that to many, appear to be perfect and exciting. A vast majority of fans do not realize the stresses that artists are put under by labels, industry professionals, the media among others. Many artists try to keep these issues out of the public eye, which tends to lead to substance abuse, depression, and even thoughts of suicide. Sadly, many have faced the unimaginable fate of taking their own lives, bowing under the pressures of living up to the expectations of fans, labels, or others. Writing and recording music on a constant basis add stress and anxiety on artists. The pressure to perform and resonate with audiences is another prevalent mental-health challenge…over time, consistent feelings of inadequacy can increase the risk of developing anxiety and depression.
We believe that it is important to raise awareness around not only mental health issues that artists in the music industry face every day, but to also make it a priority to put the mental health of our artists first. To do that, we are partnered with Paul Kiger, owner & mental health counselor of Supporting Act Counseling to provide counseling services to our artists. With over 10 years of experience working in the mental health and substance use field as a therapist, Paul’s goal is to bring his knowledge, skills, and experience as a touring artist to his practice, supporting artists as they navigate the complex issues that accompany touring and a lifestyle with such high demands.
