The hook and most of the chorus came to her in a dream at 4 a.m., prompting her to grab her phone and record the melody into her Voice Notes before it slipped away. By morning, she fleshed out the rest of the song, allowing it to flow naturally.

At its heart, Stronger Than The Whiskey is the raw account of loving someone struggling with addiction. Meuse explains, “It’s giving that perspective from the person the addiction hurts, not just the person with the addiction.” The relationship that inspired the song revealed itself over time, as she realized her partner needed alcohol just to function. “Sometimes you have to let go of what’s not meant for you to make room for what is,” she reflects. The track’s haunting hook, “I guess I wasn’t stronger than the whiskey,” captures the devastating moment when love loses its battle against addiction. But for Meuse, the writing process became a turning point. “This song was exactly that — making something good out of the pain,” she says. “It was my goodbye, my closure, and a way to tell others they’re not alone.”

While whiskey serves as the song’s central metaphor, for Meuse, it’s far more than just a lyric — it’s a symbol of heartbreak, chaos, and ultimately letting go. She recounts how the man who inspired the song would drink an entire bottle of Jameson a day, often blacking out and forgetting what he had said. The line, “After all the cheap shots you take of me and Jameson,” isn’t just poetry; it’s lived experience.

The process of writing the song was therapeutic. “I was in a dark place, and I needed to move through those feelings,” Meuse admits. While she typically shies away from vulnerability, she embraced it here, finding empowerment in honesty. “I’m glad I can be myself to my fans and not have to place a veil of falsehood across social media or how I hold myself daily.”

When it came time to record, Meuse turned to longtime collaborator Josh Bright. The song weaves together country, Americana, and folk influences, blending Meuse’s signature vulnerability with the sonic textures of artists like Kacey Musgraves and Noah Kahan with her own unmistakable style. The result is a track that balances grit and tenderness, capturing both pain and the strength to overcome it.

Reactions from fans have been swift and emotional. After debuting the song acoustically at a bar, Meuse recalls, “Several people came up to me, but I specifically remember one person saying, ‘You have GOT to record that.’ That was all I needed to hear.”

Looking back, Meuse feels proud. “It shows my vulnerability and ability to be raw and real and not care what anybody thinks. Yes, it happened to me. Yes, it sucked. Yes, my heart was broken… but I made something beautiful from it.”

The release comes at a pivotal time for Meuse, who is now beginning Officer Candidate School with the U.S. Coast Guard. Meuse is optimistic about the balance this new path will bring. She sees this new chapter as a chance to create from a place of stability. “I’ll never stop making music,” Meuse says. “I think being in the Coast Guard will allow me to focus on actually enjoying music again rather than running myself into the ground just to barely survive,” she says.
