Richie Hume: Grit, Heart, and Fatherhood Fuel a New Chapter in Rock

MVK Music Group’s own Richie Hume has spent most of his life pouring raw emotion into music. With influences that stretch from the edgy grit of 90’s grunge to the soulful storytelling of modern singer-songwriters, Hume’s work resonates deeply with listeners seeking authenticity, catharsis, and connection. In a recent sit-down, Richie opened up about his journey, inspirations, creative process, and what lies ahead as both an artist and soon-to-be father.

A Life Shaped by Music

From childhood, music was at the center of Hume’s world. Diagnosed with ADD, he often found himself drifting away from classrooms and conversations — but always into melodies and rhythms. “I wasn’t trying to be rude to them and tune them out,” he recalls. “I just couldn’t stop thinking about music all the time.”

Now based in Tampa, Hume thrives in a city where live music opportunities are endless. “A working musician can play twice a day here if they seek that,” he says. “I have to limit the amount I play so I have energy to create and be a good husband, but it’s nice to know the opportunities are always there.”

His sound draws from the grit of 90’s grunge and the storytelling of artists like Chris Stapleton and City and Colour. In response to how he blends those seemingly different inspirations into one cohesive sound, Hume said, “Man, if someone out there thinks I’m actually successful in that, I’m flattered! I just make the song that I want to make when I sit down to write/record. Whatever I’ve been listening to, watching or reading inevitably informs that.”

Sound, Influences & Inspiration

Hume’s influences span genres, from Stone Temple Pilots and Queens of the Stone Age to Chris Stapleton and City and Colour. While fans may hear the fusion, Hume insists his approach is simple: “I just make the song that I want to make when I sit down to write or record. Whatever I’ve been listening to, watching or reading inevitably informs that.”

When asked what he hopes fans feel when they listen, Hume doesn’t choose one emotion: “All of the above. I want them to have the experience with my songs that THEY need to have. Through that occurrence is where I think we form a connection.”

And when he needs to reset creatively? He returns to albums like Third Eye Blind’s debut, White Bat by He is Legend, and anything with Scott Weiland.

The Creative Process

For Hume, songs often begin with a riff or vocal melody before expanding into full compositions. Lyrics usually come last, unless he’s leaning acoustic. While his catalog ranges from heavy to mellow, he doesn’t try to fit into a single box:

“Mostly to my chagrin, I’ve never created anything to get more streams or followers. In order to stay authentic, I have to write what I want to write”.

That authenticity is what makes his songs resonate. And while writing is a personal release, he sees his role as bigger than himself: “God put me here to abide and to be a vessel.”

Growth, Lessons & Life Ahead

Looking forward, Hume plans to create and release more frequently beginning in 2026, embracing growth through consistency. Along the way, he’s learned one lesson above all: “Make genuine decisions; in the art and in the business of music. Not ‘good’ or ‘right’ decisions — GENUINE decisions.”

If given the chance, Hume would collaborate with the DeLeo brothers of Stone Temple Pilots, praising their unique chord progressions.

But his biggest collaboration is about to begin — with his growing family. Hume and his wife are expecting a daughter in January.

“Now more than ever, I want to lean on God to make me into the best version of myself. My daughter will be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever had a hand in creating, so I want to be the best man for her that I can be, I want her to love her dad (and mom) more than anything.” he says. “Becoming a dad will change everything. My daughter will now be at the center of all of my decisions. And I think that’s a good thing. I’m tired of being at the center of all my decisions.”

Feet on the Ground and Beyond

Hume’s latest release, Feet on the Ground, captures that same spirit of resilience and commitment. Originally written about a difficult relationship, he reshaped it after meeting his wife, making it a song about choosing to stay grounded together through all of life’s challenges.

As for what’s next? Hume admits even he doesn’t know where his sound is heading: “We’re going to find out together in the upcoming year.”

And for those who want to know the man behind the music, Hume offers this, “We are one and the same. If you think you know me because you’ve heard my music, you are absolutely right.
