FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pacific Northwest hard-rock outfit Owls & Aliens have officially released their electrifying new single, “Shape Shifting,” a powerful and deeply personal track now available on all major streaming platforms. The release marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for the band as they push themselves sonically, lyrically, and creatively, embracing evolution and self-discovery with renewed intensity.

At its core, “Shape Shifting” explores the unsettling but transformative experience of not yet being who you know you can become — feeling like a different person depending on the room you’re in, searching for confidence, and asking those around you for patience and love as you grow through your own evolution.

A Track Born from Transition

Written during a period of major change for the members, “Shape Shifting” became a turning point for the band both personally and musically.

Guitarist Jeff Martinez describes the spark: “I was hungry for something heavy, catchy, classical, yet not too dated — something with the spirit of older music but that still sounded fresh and new.”

The song began with his hard-hitting main riff, channeling the fire of classic Van Halen and the intensity of Judas Priest, before quickly growing into something bigger through the band’s diverse influences.

Drummer Dakotah Webb recalls pushing his playing to new places: “I wanted that standard rock beat, but with double-kick moments to deliver a punch while still being catchy. It’s powerful and in-your-face right from the start.”

For guitarist Travis Siebecke, the writing stretched him creatively, “It pushed me outside my normal playing style, and I’m proud of what came out of it.”

A Message for Anyone Still Finding Themselves

Lyrically, the song takes on identity, belonging, and the confusion of growing pains.

Vocalist Dustin Carter explains: “It’s about how you can be different around different people but still be accepted for who you are — and how patience is needed during those changes.”

The band says the song is for anyone who feels caught between who they were and who they’re becoming. “Our hope is that our message will connect in a way that inspires confidence within yourself — and that believing in yourself to take on any changes you may face is one of the most important things you can do.”

Behind the Studio Doors

Recorded with producer Sean Stack of Fat Cat Recording Studios, the song took on new life during the studio process.

The band credits Sean for key moments that shaped the track: refining the second-chorus breakdown, structuring the backup vocals, pushing post-solo melodies upward, and, allegedly, polishing off a mega pint of wine in the process.

“A lot of the magic happened on the spot,” the band says. “Little spontaneous decisions made the track what it is.”

A New Era Begins

The band sees “Shape Shifting” as a bold statement about where Owls & Aliens are headed next.

Jeff puts it plainly: “It’s hotter, louder, quicker, more aggressive. It shows how versatile and strong we are.”

Bassist Nick Ohbronovich adds, “It’s a new theme and new direction — broadening our horizons.”

Following their debut album, the band says this song represents growth, maturity, and a refreshed creative fire.

Building Toward What’s Next

The release of “Shape Shifting” is only the beginning. Owls & Aliens plan to roll out additional singles, a second full-length album and a return to touring next summer. “We’re back,” Travis says. “And there’s no shortage of ideas.” Dustin offers the single-sentence takeaway: “It’s about working on yourself, finding your confidence, and asking for grace as you learn from your mistakes.”
