Country Music Artist Cody Weaver Releases New Southern Noise EP

MVK Music Group artist Cody Weaver and his band are no strangers to the Country music scene, having played live shows last year and releasing songs like “Heavy Load”, and emotional ballad, and “Burn” a more upbeat traditional country tune, which hit number one on KB Country Radio in Canada. While this year, however, has been a year full of ups and downs for everyone, Cody & his crew managed to put together an EP that may just be the best collection of Country songs put out this year. Cody takes us on a journey with each song on his new ‘Southern Noise’ EP, which was officially released today, with each song based off of real life experiences near and dear to Cody himself. Two singles off of the new ‘Southern Noise’ EP, “Dad’s Old Ford” & “Cope”, were released prior to the full EP just a couple weeks ago. An official music video for “Cope” is set to be released next Friday, December 11^th on YouTube & VEVO.

Cody Weaver is a proud fourth generation Floridian and credits his musical style to being immersed in the sounds of American music throughout his life in the South. Undeniable music rooted in blues, bluegrass, traditional country and rock n’ roll.

“I’ve grown up on country music! My dad is big into bluegrass and classic country, so my love for this music started very early.” Weaver’s unmistakable sound, unwavering passion, dedication, and do-it-yourself work ethic sets him apart from other country music artists and is evident on his forthcoming EP, Southern Noise, due out December 4. “I craved a new take on old music so I decided to do it myself. So far it has been an amazing journey and some really awesome music has come out of it.”

Following 2019’s “Burn,” Weaver’s single that hit number one on KB Country Radio in Canada, comes the new five-track collection. “It’s the first compilation of songs that I’ve put together, which is really cool to see come to life. Listening to all of these songs in order takes you on a journey through all kinds of emotions.” Southern Noise was written and arranged by Weaver while providing his band members the opportunity to create their own additions. “These songs stand out to me because they have a familiar traditional country sound but all of me and the band’s influences are clearly evident, such as rock, metal, blues and funk.” 

The opening track and lead single, “Dad’s Old Ford,” a rollicking tune submerged in traditional country production and storytelling was penned from Weaver’s childhood experiences.  “Growing up on an orange grove in Buckingham Florida, we didn’t have much but that old truck meant so much to me,” explains Weaver. “The song’s message is about taking pride in what you do have and being content when it seems everyone else just wants more.” 

The hard-hitting, arena-ready second single, “Cope,” was written on Weaver’s back porch in a stream of consciousness; completed in under an hour. “I had the idea of writing some wordplay on Copenhagen, so while we were playing around with chord structures I just started singing some words with it and it all just fell into place.” A fierce metallic solo punches through the mix as a firm reminder that rock is now firmly cemented in the country genre and makes for a smart fit for a song like “Cope.” 

“Not This Time,” the EP’s third track, opens with a traditional country fiddle melody that flirts with bluegrass. It fittingly prepares the listener for a classic ex-love song that quickly picks up steam and chugs along by the propulsion of heavy guitar riffs. “Before I Met You” takes the listener away from the heartbreak of “Not This Time” and into a new found love, detailing an appreciation of what’s truly important once you find the perfect match. The high-energy title track wraps the EP with a party; a rowdy barn-burner that is a sure contender for a Cody Weaver live show encore. Overall, Southern Noise is a true modern country-rock EP filled with twang, guitar riffs and good ‘ol southern charm. 

We interviewed Cody regarding the new Southern Noise EP release:

MVK: Can you tell us a little backstory on the songs off of Southern Noise? What inspired them?

Cody:  These five songs were all written based off experiences throughout my life. Some are underlying messages I wanted to get across, especially the song ‘COPE’. The songs are also built around the music that I listen to, old country, southern rock, blues, and metal. I wanted to bend the genre a bit to the rock side without losing the traditional feel.

MVK: How does the music off of your new ‘Southern Noise’ EP compare to your earlier music?

Cody: I feel that I have been growing a lot as a writer and I’m getting better with wordplay. I also think I’m finding my voice a little more with each record. So these songs should sound less forced, more artistic and interesting to listen to than my earlier stuff. Being a songwriter is about always learning and growing as an artist.

MVK: During the song writing process for the EP, what was written first…the vocals or the guitar melody, etc.?

Cody: Each song came about in a different way, some just came together while jamming on the porch. I usually come up with at least an idea or a title to start with, sometimes just one line, and I just build around it until it works! Sometimes it comes easy, sometimes it’s a battle, but I’m very proud of this EP and the song I’ve been writing.

MVK: Your style of country is a great mix of classic country & southern rock with your own twist, is that by design or does the band’s sound just kind of create itself?

Cody: I would say the answer is yes to both, it was by design to write songs like this, and when I was able to get the right people together in my band, it all fell into place. I got extremely lucky finding these guys. The creative energy at our sessions is insane!

MVK: Was Southern Noise a planned project or did it come as a result of being quarantined with no live performances going on?

Cody: I did plan to put out an EP this year, but these songs weren’t written until we were quarantined with nothin’ else to do. Except ‘Dad’s Old Ford’, which I wrote that last year. Covid has slowed everything down tremendously though, I originally wanted to have this EP out by the summer of 2020 and obviously that didn’t work out, but now I’m just happy to be able to release it this year! 

MVK: Do you have a favorite song off of the Southern Noise EP?

Cody: The title track, ‘Southern Noise’. It’s a banger, it’s a blast to play live, and I really like the southern-rock vibe from it. 

MVK: Do you have any more new music projects in the works?

Cody: I do! I am currently working on 6 new songs, with the goal of a full-length album in 2021. It’s unclear how our show schedule will look next year so I am already just gearing up to crank out more new music.

MVK: Anything else that you would like to share?
