Originally from DeLand, Florida, Matt Burke’s journey in the world of music began at a young age, inspired by his love for music as a child, auditioning for school choir and eventually testing the waters in live music. Over the years, he honed his craft, performing at local venues and steadily building a loyal fan base. His dedication to authenticity and his ability to connect with his audience through his music set him apart as an artist to watch.

We interviewed Matt regarding his addition to the MVK Music Group roster and here is what he had to say:

What does this announcement and working with and under the guidance of MVK Music Group mean to you?      

MB: Embarking on this new chapter with MVK Music Group feels like an exhilarating shift in my journey as a songwriter and artist. For years, I’ve been navigating the music industry as a solo act, often feeling like a one-man production. The need to assemble a cohesive team has been a recurring piece of advice I’ve heard over the years, but finding folks that can deliver on what they promise has been a challenge. I’m excited about this collaboration with MVK and I’m hopeful it will get my music into lots of new ears!

How did you get into music and what led you to the decision to make a career in music?

MB: Music has always been an essential part of my life’s soundtrack. From a young age I was drawn to melodies and lyrics – I slept with the radio on right next to my bed for most of my childhood. In second grade, I was already auditioning for the school choir, setting the stage for a lifelong journey. As I grew, so did my passion. From garage bands in middle school to honing my saxophone skills in high school, and countless bar gigs and cover acts over the years, my musical path has always been a mix of exploration and growth.

Initially I was hesitant to dive full time into music – I had a good office job in Chicago that paid well while I did music on the side and I was scared to abandon that type of security. But I really wasn’t interested in the work I was doing and my gut always told me to put more time and more effort into my music… but that fear kept me playing it safe for years.

Fast forward to 2014 and over a six-week period I lost that job, my 7-year relationship ended, and my father passed away unexpectedly. My mom was alone down in Florida and I had nothing tying me to Chicago anymore, so I loaded up everything I had in a U-Haul and moved back to Florida to do music full-time.

I moved to Nashville in 2019 to focus on my solo career and songwriting and I’m so glad I did – this feels like the most authentic version of my artists vision I’ve ever been able to create.

What is the ultimate direction for you as an artist?

MB: The ultimate direction for me as an artist is to continue carving out my own unique path while staying true to the core of who I am. I’ve always believed that authenticity is the key to creating a lasting impact through music. I want my songs to be windows into my experiences, emotions, and thoughts, creating a connection that goes beyond just the music itself.

As I continue to evolve and grow as a songwriter, my goal is to craft songs that resonate on a deeply human level – songs that capture the essence of life’s highs and lows, its triumphs and struggles. I want my music to be a source of solace, inspiration, and joy for those who listen.

Who has influenced you the most musically?

MB: Growing up, I was exposed to a lot of outlaw country music, as well as classic rock and folk music thanks to my parents’ eclectic taste. The storytelling prowess of artists like Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash resonated deeply with me, planting the seeds of my love for heartfelt lyrics and timeless melodies. As I delved further into my musical journey, the poignant songwriting of more modern troubadours like Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton opened my eyes to the vast possibilities of expression in music, showing me the power of blending contemporary sensibilities with classic storytelling. Their ability to capture complex emotions in their songs has inspired me to dig deeper into my own experiences and share them through my music.

Ultimately, it’s the combination of all these influences that has molded my sound and approach as an artist. My goal is to pay homage to the artists who have shaped me while forging my own unique blend of familiar nostalgia.

How would you describe the music that you typically create? 

MB: I write what I like to call “struggle country” – it’s a blend of raw, honest storytelling and gritty determination. My songs delve into the depths of life’s challenges, but they also resonate with the resilient spirit that drives us to overcome adversity. I’m trying to put a new twist on classic country sounds and themes, drawing from my own experiences and those of everyday people who’ve faced uphill battles.

With a mix of heartfelt lyrics and melodies that stick, my music speaks to the universal struggles we all encounter, whether it’s heartbreak, loss, or chasing dreams that seem just out of reach. It’s the kind of music that accompanies you through tough times, offering both solace and inspiration. At the core, my music is a reflection of the human journey – marked by highs, lows, and the unbreakable will to forge ahead.

Of course, it’s not all heavy stuff. I also pepper in some fun and lighthearted songs that offer a welcome break from the more introspective tunes. I like a good honky-tonkin’ whiskey tune as much as the next guy!

How would you describe your creative songwriting process?

MB: My creative songwriting process involves collecting an assortment of titles, lyric fragments, and voice memos on my phone to capture moments of inspiration that strike throughout my day. It’s fascinating how everyday conversations can spark new ideas that find their way into my songs. Collaboration plays a significant role in shaping my music: my regular weekly co-writes hold me accountable and keep me engaged and productive. These sessions offer a platform for bouncing ideas, sharing perspectives, and nurturing the seeds of creativity that eventually grow into fully realized songs. I write a lot of songs each year, so I get to cherry-pick the best ones to release. I spend 2-3 days per week in the studio with my producer always working to get the stuff I’m most excited about out to the world.

Are there any other artists or bands that you guys would love to collaborate with?

MB: In the country realm, someone like Chris Stapleton, whose authenticity and raw storytelling resonate deeply with me, would be an incredible partner. I’d also love to write with Waylon or Townes Van Zandt – one of the classic old outlaw guys – if they were still around. I think a collaboration with Sturgill Simpson or Colter Wall would be great too!  

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?  

If I could wave a magic wand and change something about the music industry, it would be to create a more level playing field for independent artists. The industry can often feel like a complex maze, with gatekeepers and established norms that can hinder emerging talents from getting their voices heard. I’d love to see a shift towards more direct connections between artists and their audience, without the need for intermediaries who sometimes prioritize profit over artistry.

Additionally, I’d advocate for a stronger focus on supporting artists’ growth and development, rather than simply chasing viral hits. The music industry has a tendency to favor trends and quick successes, which can overshadow the time and effort needed to nurture authentic talent and lasting creativity. By fostering an environment that values long-term artistic growth and diverse expressions, we could truly celebrate the rich tapestry of voices that make up the music world.

What’s next for Matt Burke? Anything else that you’d like the fans to know?

I’m currently working on the finishing touches of an acoustic album, a heartfelt project in collaboration with my singing partner and girlfriend, Danielle Beu. We’re pouring our souls into this album, and it’s been a journey of raw emotions and genuine storytelling. The album, titled “Hookups and Heartaches,” captures the essence of life’s ups and downs, and I can’t wait to release it.

I’ve also teamed up with my good friend and co-writer Brian Allison for a collaborative EP that’s set to be released by the end of the year with a lead single dropping soon. Our combined creative energy has resulted in some incredible tracks and a unique sound that’s different from what we both do independently. I’m working on a full-band full-length album of original songs as well, which is slated for release by the end of this year. Lots of new music in the works!

Beyond the studio, I’m always writing songs for pitch and sync opportunities here in Nashville. I write so many songs each year and not all of them are a good fit for me as an artist, so it’s always exciting to see where my songs might find a home. And of course, the live music scene is where my heart truly belongs. My gig schedule is buzzing with shows in and around Nashville, as well as trips back to Chicago and Florida.
